'Department Head' advantages

posted Aug 17, 2018 20:47:33 by IanMurphy
Various roles on the ship give Advantages such as 'Medical Department' or 'Engineering Department'.

How do these manifest during play? The rules say an advantage can lower the difficulty. So is it just assumed that the Medical Officer gets -1 DC on all medical tasks while using the medical facilities? Seems somewhat duplicating the assist you get from the ship's medical department doesn't it?

An advantage will reduce the difficulty of a relevant task by 1, or allow some relevant tasks to be attempted when they might not otherwise be possible.

In brief, though, any Trait - Advantages and Complications included - is simply "this is something significant that might affect your Tasks". A Medical Department advantage is just a note to say "I've got a team of doctors, nurses, medical technicians, and orderlies at my command, and they can help me do things".

A lot of the time, that might mean -1 Difficulty if you're doing something that a team of assistants would be helpful for (but not everything logically benefits from assistants), and would allow you to attempt things that would require multiple people to even attempt (like commanding them to do something, or doing complex tasks that take several people to contribute).

And yes, that can stack with other traits and advantages.
