Where's the TOS Love?

posted Mar 11, 2018 06:25:32 by BryanKowalski
I was considering purchasing this RPG but there doesn't seem to be much information about the original series. Is there any plans to release any supplements or adventures in that timeline, or will it all be just the next generation?

Thanks!

The default aesthetic is TNG era but there is plenty of TOS specific material, particularly in the recent supplements of Command Devision and Beta Quadrant. Other than the starships the material is designed to be for the 3 eras of Trek so it can be adapted to suit your campaign of whichever era. Published adventures in both These are the Voyages and the Living Campaign have both some TNG and TOS era specific adventures, with the Living Campaign specifically issuing one of each with every release.

There are no era specific supplements going to be produced that we have been made aware of, indeed we have been told this many times. As announced there are 7 supplements, 3 division and 4 quadrant books.

I think I remember seeing at some point a mention of a TOS supplement (as well as a Klingon only supplement, which might have been folded into Beta Quadrant instead) in the works a while ago, but I do not know if it has been cancelled, or maybe postponed until 2019.

The TOS book is an unscheduled plan if I'm remembering correctly, similarly with the Klingon book.

TOS, like the other series, is sprinkled throughout the books and products in the line. Half of the living campaign is set in TOS 2269, on the Constitution-class USS Lexington. The adventures in These are the Voyages, Mission Compendium 1 are either written specifically for TOS or include guidance on how to adapt it for use in TOS.

There are no current plans to release era-specific books, because we decided to represent the entirety of Star Trek in all the books, with 2371 as a default start date. TOS permeates everything we do, however, and that's reflected in the art, text, rules, sidebars, spaceframes available, etc. There's also a TOS miniatures set, probably more to come. And there'll be more TOS material in the various sourcebooks coming up, as well as more TOS-focused adventures.

Don't let the covers of the books fool you--this is a game for all Trek eras, not just TNG. Hope this helps.

I count myself among those who prefer to run a TOS campaign. Technically I'm running a game influenced visually by the reboot movies and Discovery that takes place during TOS, but yeah I'm really wanting more TOS stuff. Like the Beta Quadrant book was great but I felt it was really skewed towards the TNG era... that's the default setting for the game, I get it, but I still want more content for TOS.

Be more specific. "More TOS content" doesn't help us developers because we already know we're providing a lot. If there's something specific you want to see oriented toward TOS, start up a wish list. :)

Same for you ENT players out there (anyone?). We've actually had very little art so far for ENT era, though all the books support ENT play as well.

like the player cards in the GM screen not being laid out for TOS or the ship tiles. that's a starter. I would love to see more fleshed out for the klingon neutral zone, TOS era flag officers, starbases, mechanics for Vulcan rituals, expanded rules for mind melds, etc. if we get a thread going for it I'll gladly pitch in.

I think future releases could benefit from cover art that showcases the multi-generational nature of the franchise. For instance, the Operations Department book cover could be a composite with a redshirt protecting a startled Yeoman in the foreground, behind them on one side is a DS9 officer operating a transporter, and on the other side an engineer examining a PADD while standing in front of a Galaxy class warp core.
Judging the books by their covers so far, it really looks like a TNG game.

that's a great point. I feel like TOS takes a back seat just from the cover art.

@JimJohnson: Tops on my wish list would be a set of TOS-era Federation Deck Tiles.

Yeah I think I recall the TOS era tiles were supposed to be one of the next ones coming out, i.e. the poll we did didn't even include it as an option because it was already decided of course you need TOS tiles.

That is the main thing that would excite me. I don't have a problem adapting the rules and scenarios so far to our TOS game by any means.
