Setting up for a campaign

posted Feb 17, 2018 07:01:52 by PatricHenson
So, my gaming group will be starting up our game of STA once more. I think we've only had one session since the playtest, so I'm eager to get it going again! My group is essentially a group of board-gamers that I talked into trying an RPG. Since most of them have little experience with RPGs, I struggled with helping all of them to develop their "RPG legs" if you will. But I got to thinking; they have a lot of experience with board games, so I concocted a few handouts in a board-gamesque style in hopes of getting them more comfortable. I thought I'd share in case others may find them helpful and/or fun.

Please tell me you're going to share links (or something) for this awesome looking stuff?

Another vote for links or files, especially the equipment cards. Would love to order some for my group.

If we're sharing, here's what I made at Inked Gaming (inkedgaming.com), Custom Little Playmat size (10x16 inches). I put the Master Systems Display out for normal play (they're in an Intrepid-class) and the DS9 one out for space battles. There are enough 'zones' in the space battle scene that I can define on the fly, if need be. The quality of these are superb.

Sure, I'll do that as soon as I can. This weekend is pretty packed, so it might not be for a few days.

That's a lot of fun! They look great.

Our first three games were more of the beam down to a planet and deal with a problem variety to establish tone and character. Then I finally introduced ship to ship (or ship to cube!) combat in the 4th game and it really showed how the rules you highlight in your images can shine. It'd be fun just to have those in front of them instead of or with the quick reference guides. I plan on printing your stuff out. I used my old playmates communicators, phasers, tricorders etc. as table props too. It's fun just to get that old communication sound when you want to request to beam up.

Oh my! This has been a while. So sorry. Things have been very hectic, but I should be able to do that this week. My apologies for the delay.

No problem. Life happens...time flies. I myself had forgotten (for the last few months) about your play-aids until one of my players said something last week. It’s all good. 😎

Those do look extremely awesome. Anything that makes the game more immersive for the players is a good thing in my book.

Very cool - players always love handouts. Looking forward to seeing the files too.

i remember seeing someone do something similar to help players in space battles.
