Clarification on Dread

posted Nov 13, 2017 12:58:34 by mattbell69
On page 143 of the MC Core Book, there is a section that reads:

‘Steel Nerves’ Momentum Spend
Succeeding particularly well on a test can bolster one’s resolve – the character may spend Momentum to recover one Dread per Momentum spent on "any" test.

Steel Nerves is listed on the Combat Momentum spend. Does this mean that Dread can be cleared with only Combat Momentum or with Momentum from any successful skill test?

Momentum from any skill test - after all, it is a finite resource.

Sounds good to me.
My players tend to buy a lot of D20 for DSP, meaning they get a lot of momentum. This means they find it easy to clear.

Group Momentum has max pool of 6 and bleeds out every scene (and you can only have a max of 3 extra bonus dice on a roll, from both DS and/or Momentum).
Don't forget that the DS pool is bottomless and use of it does not necessarily have to be DS-related - the GM can add things to the scene (not just making the bad guys go first etc.) like reinforcements, sharp spiky bits, sheer drops etc.

Fully agree with the Max Pool size, but when they buy enough dice to get some personal momentum they use this to clear the Dread before adding to the Group Pool. I think that I just need to add more things for them to worry about than just simply clearing Dread.

I like Sharp Spiky Bits! I need to remember that one ;)

I'd use DSP (remember, you can use if for any Adversary, not just DL!) to
- let the bad guys to go first (add a Dreadful weapon like a Blade of Ilian, and ouch!)
- corrupt the PCs weapons, or force a reload
- inspire 1 Dread with 2 DSP - so any extra dice from Momentum have a greater chance of Complications
- the sharp spiky bits would an environmental effect which makes the tests more difficult (thus a bigger chance of failing/complications, and reducing momentum). Given these can affect the whole zone, it's fun for the GM to make things interesting!

Could you give an example?

So to be clear I could buy 3 DSP and do a 'let 'er rip' (say 2 loads) and could roll 7d20s, right? Or am I limited to 5d20s period, DSP, CPs, and DSPs included?
