Living Campaign Questions?

posted Jul 16, 2017 11:19:40 by RfTQ
I'm super excited about running the Living Campaign at the board game cafe I work at.
But I have a few questions I just want to check, mostly because we run lots of D&D Adventures League & Pathfinder Society and our player base is already asking me about this type of stuff.
Is this the best place to ask? I did post on the Reddit page too.
It's mostly things about character creation, advancement and replaying adventures / logging play ect.
I know this is all dry stuff, and the potential answer is, "we don't know" or "that's not relevant" but I said to the players I try to find out for them.

This would be the place to ask. What were the questions?

I posted the below on the Reddit & then also got a reply from Modiphius.

So most of the questions revolve around character build, and advancement.
I could be wrong, but the way it seems to me is if I join The Living Campaign then I choose a ship for my character and I can play through the scenario, if I play in a store, or a convention, my character should have a rough idea what the general story arc of the ship has been. (So joining the Thunderchild is a little like joining a faction in Pathfider Society or Adventure League. )
Is there a standard way to build Characters for The Living Campaign? Does everyone use the Lifepath Creation method? Or can they opt for the Creation in Play method? Would everyone be "Experienced Officers" or are they free to choose if they're Veteran or Young?
What about plating characters that want to be part Klingon, part Borg, ect. There's inevitably going to be players that want to be their version of Belana or Seven of Nine, is that just no go?
Advancement is great for a home game, but it feels a little vague for organised play. If the Living Campaign isn't a style of play like that, then that's groovy, but if it is something to rival other RPG OP systems, something like the points from Pathfinder Society might be a better idea of advancement.
Are there official Pre Gens knocking about? I've got the info about the Shakelton Expanse & Star Base 364, as well as the July Admiral's report, but the intro to the adventure Convoy - SE119 talks about Pre Gens, it also doesn't say what ship it's for, does that mean it can be played by each ship?
Convoy SE-119 is a mission for the Star Trek Adventures Living Campaign series. This mission is meant to be played by a Gamemaster (GM) and 3-6 Players and has been designed to be used for a vessel and its crew in 2371. To run this mission, the Gamemaster needs to be familiar with the mission itself, the Star Trek Adventures rules, and the pre-generated characters.
If a player plays something like Convoy SE-119 with The Thunderchild, could they also play it with a different character on The Venture?
Is there a Log Sheet, (Star Fleet Personnel Log?) for The Living Campaign to help players (and GMs) track what "Episodes" they've played?
I know this all sounds really admin based boring stuff, but we have a lot of players who join love Organised Play for their RPGs, and part of what keeps it all moving along is this style of stuff, I really love the idea of a serious OP system for Star Trek Adventures I believe a strong in store way to play drives the popularity of games, and think it lends itself perfectly to a OP system too.

and their reply
Hi sorry for the late reply :-) - yes everyone should use the lifepath, though we'll be making some pre-gens (updated from the playtest) available too). Feel free to use creation in play and either veteran or experienced - it's all fine - Part X part Y characters are fine if you want to fudge the rules for them for now. We're not restricting characters and you don't have to register them. - So yes we'll be assuming a basic level of advancement from episode to episode. This is more about telling a big storyline together and being part of the plot evolving. We aren't going to be restrictive about who or what plays - As above official pregens updated from the playtest will be available shortly. You can play with any of the three ships or choose your own - Yes it doesn't matter which ship is used with convoy - Good thought I'll check on a Log Sheet It's all good questions and we've only sent living campaign info out to retailers so far, when the community gets it who are signed up we'll be answering all these questions

Does anyone know if Shield of Tomorrow (the Geek & Sundry / Project Alpha show) is in the same Living Campaign?

or are they making up their own timeline?

As the idea for the living campaign was discussed in playtest:
1) EVERYTHING had to be approved by CBS before they published
2) This would most likely slow the amount of LC material to once a month or even once a quarter as it waited to be approved by the CBS bean counters.
3) If, like other LC ran by other companies, events in the LC would be altered by play from the various conventions, organized lay, etc, then the wait time for once a quarter would be more realistic than once a month.
4) Most likely there will be long periods of silence between published adventures for the LC (not the regular publishing schedule).

Remember all this was conjecture based on what we experienced during the playtest, so OMMV once they get the ball rolling, and I am sure Modiphius is looking for a better release schedule than once every three months (though once every other month would actually be pretty awesome.) But while the LC is a major part of the "selling point" of the game, I get the feeling it's not the primary selling point (unlike PA or DDAL, etc) and that home brew campaigns are the real target. Of course, I could be wrong.

Well, is the LC running right now?

Living campaign started during the playtest and is continuing. Next adventures should be released soon.

Is there somewhere that the overall play test adventure information can be found? Details about the Shackleton Expanse, etc.?

I only got to participate in the ver initial Xerxes adventure...

Thanks!

I'm looking at bringing my Roll20 group into the TNE LC (and thus into the STA universe) and I( have a question (well I have lots but this one keeps floating to the top) as I can't find any information about the LC ship options.

Would the characters be assigned to a specific ship for the rest of their LC career and then have to use that ship for every session (which generally feels right), or can they be temporarily assigned to one of the three available ships based on need / context? It mkaes more game sense for the characters to jump in a combat ship if they are expecting combat etc, but that's not really how Starfleet works :P
