Building out TOS Ship Specs

posted Jul 07, 2017 13:40:58 by michael wikan
My plan is to set my campaign in TOS era, with the Team assigned to a Saladin-Class Federation destroyer along the contested Federation Border with the Klingon Empire (in the months Post-Organian Treaty where small unit conflicts were common but the likelihood of a General War was diminished).

I am working up designs for the Federation Saladin, Federation Tug, Klingon D5, D6, and the older Bird of Prey design from Enterprise in it's last upgrade variant. Probably a few designs from Axanar as well. Anyone else working this?

As previously stated my campaign will be TOS based. I hadn't given much thought to other ships for that era.
I would be curious to see your designs in order to steal ehm I mean study them.

I'm going to be posting a list of ships to my crew so they can choose what class they want to ply the galaxy in. I'm sure they say Constitution, but who knows, maybe they'll surprise me and say Hermes, or Miranda or Soyuz or some other variant.

I hate that Enterprise gave the Klingons a BoP - they should NEVER have had that design before the treaty that gave the BoP and cloaking tech to the Klingons and the D7 to the Romulans.... Poor, poor ship management Okuda, you hack!

I was planning on stat'ing out ships from the TOS Era and while some will cry sacrilege, I plan to use early SFB for a guide. A lot of their stuff was spot on and made design sense at the beginning and before the lawsuit stuff. They at least followed a visible and logical progression based on the rules of the “pseudo-technology” of the Trek at the time.

I'm working on a TOS-era Miranda Class ship. The only change visually are the round TOS nacelles and period graphics. I was all ready to dig into figuring out the appropriate stats for the ship, but their identical to the Constitution Class. So, it turned out to be very easy to stat up.

I'm looking at setting my campaign around the same time period, shortly post-Organia. Lots of interesting stories to work with.

@PaulRing - Haha, I just started my group on TOS era Miranda PRE-Organia, the battleship version, 12 phaser banks, 4 photon torp tubes, lots of shuttles and little else. Of course my crew are all screw-ups and posted by SF to fail so they can order more Connies, but, hey politics aside, nice to see I'm not the only going this route.

I threw a D-3 light cruiser, a D-5 and two D-7s at them (along with a civilian and troop transport) in a running combat, they did surprisingly well. Destroyed the D-5, crippled one D-7 and swatted the other on the nose really, really hard. The only trouble they had was with the D-3, which they could neither hit nor dodge, she was really a thorn in their side.
They lasted just long enough for the Helios (Heremes), the Charger (Saladin) and the Hood to show up; which of course sent the Klingons packing. Frankly, even if they hadn't made it to that point, I was beginning to wonder if they weren't going to take them all out... My wife has a knack for starship weapons rolls, evidently.
