Character Creation Spreadsheet

posted Jul 05, 2017 13:25:28 by hartusa

I've been tinkering with a character creation spreadsheet in Open Office. It automatically calculates everything for character creation - stats, disciplines, damage bonuses etc. You just pick choices each step and that's it. It also does starship creation. It doesn't use any external scripts or macros. Just simple table lookups.

Here is the NEW link Google Sheets version 2.0. (the old link does not work anymore):

You don't need to install any additional software to use this. Just print or save to PDF the the Sheet and ShipSheet. Or you can download the entire thing as Excel or other format.

By all means, please post it

That looks nice. I won't claim to know much about legal matters, far too pedantic for my tastes, but I think others have posted homebrew character sheets without issue.

*In the meantime, Steve has spoken! lol

By the way, I really like your example character's values! I might copy some of those at some point! He sounds like a guy I'd like to serve on a starship with.

That looks great, HTusa - much more professional-looking than mine, and it does the character creation as well? Love to see it! :)

Very nice!

What? A little sophomoric college-type peer pressure now and again never hurt anyone.
Well, almost never.
Hardly ever?
Usually doesn't?

Hi HTusa.

Within OpenOffice you should be able to save the file as a .xls, which will aid those of us working from mobile devices. I look forward to seeing the sheet!

Here is the Google Sheets version. You don't need to install Open Office or Excel or whatever for this:

You can download the Excel or Open Office version from that. Just print or PDF export the Sheet and ShipSheet for the end result sheet.

Looks great, HTusa. Any chance you could let us know how to add custom classes, talents and weapons?
hartusa said Jul 06, 2017 14:36:04
TomK, it's not possible. Opening up the data section for everyone to edit brings the very real chance of someone accidentally nuking the whole thing.

But you can simply download the Open Office or the Excel version and edit it as much as you want.

Looks good - nice and concise.

And by the way, as a general note, if you use the sheet, you might want to make a copy (File -> Make a copy) or download (File -> Download as) first. Unless you want everyone to see the characters and ships you make.

I don't know how many of you still use this, but I've been updating my character and ship creator again here and there. Incorporated errata, added some features, and changed the layout so it looks better and prints/exports right for everyone (as Google doesn't allow embedding fonts, for obvious reason). It is pretty feature complete, and I'm mostly awaiting for the Command book.

But I was thinking of adding description of the Talents into the sheet, like they're in all the pregen characters. Would this be okay, since it does use material from the book directly? Want to make sure before I add anything.

I'd seen this sheet elsewhere in its previous state. It's come a long way since then. Looking good

I didn't where I found it when I was first adding stuff to the Resource Wiki, but it is linked now

Looking at your sheet makes me want to update my own. For some reason I was drawing an absolute blank about changing colours for departments, which is on my to-do list. I've looked at yours and realised; Bloody Conditional Formatting!

so err... thanks!

The creator sheet has been updated to 2.0. Lots of changes and additions, including:

* Material from Command Division and Beta Quadrant books (the info I have is second hand as I don't have the books yet, so there are probably errors)
* Section for Character Development
* Section for creating Supporting Characters (and added a second page into the print/export sheet to accommodate them)
* New Custom tab for adding homebrew material into the creator. Species, Talents, weapons, spaceframes etc. etc.
* Smaller stuff like enlisted ranks, rank name variations, reorganization, corrections and such

Unfortunately, Google Sheets really doesn't like it when I try to update the online sheet from the version I worked with offline, so I basically had to upload a new file. That means the old link doesn't work anymore. So please update the links if you have posted this on a wiki or a website or whatever.
