Dark Soul

posted May 22, 2017 15:19:18 by BruceGray
Hi! I recently found a copy of a book for MC called "Dark Soul". But based on the cover, and the contents, I believe this book is the seemingly missing "Dark Apostles" book frequently advertised on the inside back cover of many of the books. The cover seems the same, and the basic gist of the contents appears to be detailed info on the Dark Apostles - Ilian, Algeroth, Demnogonis, Semai, and Muawijhe. BTW, if you are a game master and running MC and do not have a copy of Dark Soul, I believe you really need to run out and get one. Players should not look inside too much for fear of ruining a campaign.

After playing with my team (check my topic for more details) I can one thing. Creating characteristics for Apostles means that they can be killed - Especially if you have Grizzly tank.

<Sigh> I wish there was more equipment, more candy like Worm Ammo.

But I agree. Dark Soul, Mutants and Dark Eden are must have if you want to GM anything in MC3rd.

And since the canon says some nepharites are banking on it, like Alakhai, it might be quite interesting. Killing an apostle would be the perfect high point of a campaign. Humanity gets a breather, the dark soul is given pause, and the heroes return in eternal glory.

I disagree. Sure, the Dark Soul book is worth it for the heretic content alone. But the other two, not so much.
Mutants and Heretics doesn't bring anything to the table, the heretic content is mostly fluff and mutants are, as stated by the authors, OP. Also the "secret" history of the setting is one deus ex machina railroad of determinism which changes the setting drastically from its dieselpunk origin. I am a hardcore fan of 1ed humanity vs. cosmic evil instead of the 3ed puppet humanity following a predetermined course.
Dark Eden is another cup of tea. It is a separate setting/era for a reason, it's a place for DM's to play post-apocalyptic games. The playstyle of a Dark Eden game will differ drastically from a Luna noir game. And to be honest, for all the great content the book provides, I wouldn't count as a must buy.
