Star Trek Paper Miniature Maker browser app

posted Mar 18, 2017 12:47:38 by WaynePeters
Hello folks.

Some of you will be old enough to remember an old web page I made where you could make Star Trek paper miniatures by dragging the separate components on to a figure at the top of the page. That site has long since become defunct and I finally expunged it from existence a while ago. Since then I have been working hard on a far superior replacement.

You can find the Marvellous Mechanical Star Trek Mini Maker 2.0 here:

http://www.crowstuff.co.uk/MiniMaker/index.html

It currently works in Chrome and Firefox. Apparently IE doesn't support the unity web player, though Edge will. I've not tested it in Safari.
It can take up to about a minute and a half to load in but there is usually a loading bar to keep you appraised of progress.

It's pretty self explanatory to use, I think.

FAQ

Q: Are you going to include...?
A: YES! Eventually.

Q: Where's the bloody print function!?
A: There isn't one, sorry. Neither is there a Load/Save function. I'm afraid that's a tad out of my league just yet but I definitely want to include a print function as well as a save/load one at some point. I'm afraid for now you'll have to use Print Screen or the Snips app in Windows and paste in to an art package of your choice.

Q: Why can't I resize the screen?
A: The resolution is fixed so that the images when screen-capped are around 32mm tall at 300 dpi. That means you will need a monitor resolution large enough to view the work area - which I think most folk will. I'll look into resizing options later on.

Q: Why are some parts of the uniforms grey instead of black.
A: I try to avoid colours that are too dark as they print even darker and can make the black outline indistinguishable, effectively turning the figure in to a silhouette. For this reason some colours are a little brighter than they should be too.

Wayne - in re legs/bodies/Tellarites
Note that tellarites are fatter, but not broader, than humans.

If you go with a basic set of bodies: Tellarite, Normal, slender
and separate legs: Tellarite, Short, normal, tall, Caitian.
and separate heads by species
And the leg selection sets default height for arm, head and body positions when selected...
Note that catian tails would be layered under the body, but would

You would have to cut and paste a bit to get there, but by making the standards standards...
Edoan 3rd arms simply get layered over
Top layer down:
8 Edoan Arm 3
7 Regular arms
6 Hairdo
5 Head
4 Edoan leg 3
3 Body
2 Legs
1 Tails
Just because my shirt is red
does not mean I'll soon be dead.

@Wayne: I found a website where somebody made some great references for the Kelvin uniforms (2009 through Beyond).

Your text to link here...

Oops! Didn't realise we were on to page 2! Just saw these.

Aramis, interesting ideas. I'll see if I can make them workable.

BytomMan, Awesome. Thanks, man. I'm working on the Kelvin uniforms at the moment.

I actually made a Tellarite with your original mini maker by altering the nose and shrinking him a bit.

Do you know if any other site that has something similar but more generic? I thought it would be nice to have something like that for civilians and new alien races that could be encountered.
(If you ultimately put in a bunch of civilian clothing, that would be great too! But I figure you'll have your hands full for quite a while just with canon uniforms.)

Also, would it be too labor intensive to add an option to pull up a color palette if you wanted to use a different color scheme? For example, you could select the canon colors (red, blue, or gold for most uniforms) or pull up the color palette to change them to a different non-canon color.

Sort of chibi but it is Trek
Trekkietar

Just portraits but incredibly funny results
Sci-Fi Avatars

The below two are clunky and hero portrait oriented but for aliens / civilians you can probably make do.
Hero Machine
Hero-O-Matic

If you don't mind black and white pictures you could improvise by building a test miniature here and screen shotting it. Or ordering it for real if you really dig it.
Hero Forge (Set "Genre" to Sci-Fi)

A colour palette is a nice idea. I'll add it to the list :D

Beyond uniforms, a palette for skintones would be great to allow for some random low-budget aliens. :)

I was hoping to upload an update for the miniature maker today but sadly, Unity have 'fixed' their HTML5 compiler which means it no longer works. Again. And I am at the mercy of their incredibly unhelpful 'Help' forum.
So, until then, you'll have to wait for Communicators, Tricorders, PADDs, Denobulans, Benzites and the JJ Verse duty uniforms.

Of course, if anyone is aufait with server programming/configuration and fancies helping me trying to figure it out...

Alright! I managed to revert to the old version of Unity and it works.
The Mini-Maker is updated. Now with Denobulans, Benzites, Communicators, Tricorders, PADDs and Kelvin Timeline duty uniforms. Enjoy!

So, with each new addition to the app, the code and assets are mushrooming exponentially and it's getting more and more time consuming to test each and every itteration, so any bugs or errors you spot will be gratefully recieved.
Known issues at the moment - the Kelvin PADDs at arms length overlap on to the buttons. Equally the butts of the Kelvin Phasers in the raised right hand overlap into the opposite frame. I need to widen the workspace ASAP but that's going to require a bit of work.

Benzites rule! Though can we get a Benzite option without the breathing apparatus? Some like Hoya from DS9 didn't apparently need one. Also some green aliens in Enterprise using the same makeup appliance were apparently noted as indeed being Benzites in the scripts, so it would be cool to have some green color options added as well. :)

So excited right now! I'm going to check it out as soon as I can get on my PC! You're the best!
