Thoat weight...

posted Mar 15, 2017 05:20:28 by JosephWolf
First off, thank you for adding me to the Beta. Due to work I wasn't able to participate in the Alpha but I did read and digest the material I received. I've been an avid fan of Burroughs' work since I was a lonely 12 year old. I discovered the series one summer. Anyways I was overjoyed to read you were publishing the game and with the 2d20 engine.

So while digesting the beasts material I noticed on p.19 under the thoat Physical description first paragraph, the green Martian thoat is said to be twice as heavy as the red Martian thoat even though it's 10 sofads to the smaller beasts 6 sofads. I believe the law of cubes for beast mass should bring the green Martian thoat closer to around 5x as heavy as the red Martian.

The game designer referenced Edgar Rice Burroughs writings on this subject and used what he read there as to the creature size and weight.

Point taken however there's a precedence of deviating from Burroughs canon in the range for the radium rifles in the Beta materials.

Something to consider.

That's always a tough question, when canon disagrees from logic. JosephWolf makes a good argument about approximate weights of large creatures (if an ant was the size of an elephant, it would look more like an elephant) but then if Burroughs specifically gave another value then it would seem to be something to follow in order to portray an accurate Barsoom. I'm not sure if ERB was familiar with biology concepts, so he might have made an error on this.

Good point Marv, but then our designer is not a biologist either. He just took the stats that ERB gave him. Maybe due to the lower gravity, bone mass is lighter yet still effective. Bearing in mind the Mars has a lower gravity, making items of the same mass weigh less on Barsoom.
