Hey all, love what I am reading. Only have seen one spelling mistake (unless it is supposed to be wilf and not wild).

PS: Probably the prettiest character sheet I have ever seen.

I spent a good part of the weekend going over the Beta play test material and, in general, I'm impressed. However, there are a lot of typos (easily figured out) and there are some clarity issues with character creation.

I had to closely compare the samples provided with the chargen rules in order to figure these out, so let's see if I have it right.

All Attributes start at 4. You gain bonuses (and the occasional minus) upon choosing race. You gain bonuses per Archetype (usually +2 for two Attributes). Each Archetype also supplies a Talent (Grade 1, but Earthborn gain Grade 2 Leaps and Bounds). Martians may have up to 5 Grades worth of Talents, Earthborn get 7, but at least 2 must be Might-related. Each character also gains a Descriptor that provides +1 to 2 different related Attributes. Martians start with 10 Renown and Core Gear, Earthborn arrive on Barsoom naked. Every character must take 1 Flaw that generally costs 2 or more Momentum if resisted.

This sounds about right, but I'm having trouble relating the samples provided with the rules.

Concept: Earthborn Aviatrix lost during cross-country flight, ends up on Barsoom.

Earthborn {+3 to Might, +1 to two other Attributes, -1 to one Attribute). Gains Talent: Leaps and Bounds (Grade 2)
Descriptor: Bold (+1 to Cunning and Daring). Flaw: Heroic Fury (Lose 2 Momentum if fail to respond to plight).
Explorer Archetype (+2 to Daring and Empathy). Gains Talent: Find the Way (Grade 1).
7 Grades of Talents: Bartitsu (Grade 1), If It Has Wings (Grade 3), Steady Now (Grade 1), Mighty Athlete (Grade 2).
Attributes: Cunning (4+1=5), Daring (4+1+2=8), Empathy (4+2=6), Might (4+3=7), Passion (4+1=5), Reason (4-1+1=4)
Fear (8), Injury (7), Confusion (6).
Arrives on Barsoom naked and with 0 Renown.

Did I do it right?

Additional typo: Warhoon not Warhoun in the Green Martian section

Concern regarding original source material vs Character Creation rules: The rules for Jasoomian/Barsoomian Hybrids accurately reflect Carthoris but do not reflect his sister Tara (Chessmen of Mars) who did not possess either of the mandatory bonuses for a Hybrid. There is some evidence that she possesses higher than normal Daring, but several situations arise during the periods where she is the focal character when either ability would have served her as well as they did her father and brother.

The name "Panthan" is misspelled as "Pathan" many times in the text.

"Jasoom" is occasionally misspelled as "Jarsoom" or "Jarsoomian".

The rules refer to Attribute+Skill rolls however there are no skills.

Also, in Assisting, the rules state you cannot use items that add dice to your pool but lists Luck as able to modify your assistance check. Can Luck be used with Assisting?

I am confused on the Momemtum pools. What is the difference between the personal pool and group pool.

The beginning of the Action Scene section starts by talking about the Hyborian Age.

There is some confusion over what basic damage is. There is a blue-highlighted line that says 2(cd) are rolled as a minimum, but everywhere else the minimum is 1(cd). Also, is basic damaged added to weapon damage for melee attacks? It's not totally clear. It is apparent that you get 2 additional points for Attributes from the example, but the character creation rules have @@ instead. I am assuming it's 2 for a total beginning of 36 Attribute points.

The character sheet is beautiful, but it needs a line for Luck, Character Concept, and perhaps Description. Renown is also a good idea. Oh, and it's nice to see the tattoo in the background of the sheet.

I'm going to set up a test of combat by having an Earthborn character appear on Barsoom and get challenged by 3 Warhoon (taken from the included test adventure). We will see if Earthborn agility and might can overcome giant green warriors in hand to hand combat.

Basic damage is 1[cd] but there are tonnes of ways to increase this to 2[CD]. F you could post the relevant pages and locations of the incorrect bits, that would help a lot in getting those fixed.

Character creation has differant levels now. 2 is a reasonably common ammount of customisation points though.

I've passed on your concerns about the character sheet, thank you for letting us know about the issues you have uncovered. Please keep them coming.

The original highlighted line showing 2(cd) is on page 25 of the rules document. All other locations indicate 1(cd) as base damage.

In chapter 6, the yellow highlighted sidebars for blades show that swords do 2(cd) and daggers do 1(cd) with reference to rolling the "icon" to attain the weapon's Quality of Sharp! Under Firearms, the yellow highlighted sidebar says, "Firearms are Fearsome! When an icon is rolled a blade inflicts 1 damage to the Fear stress tracker." This should be "a Firearm", not a blade. The same mistake is made under Incendiaries.

You have to go to the Mind Merchants of Zodanga to find actual damage dice for some weapons. A short sword does 2(cd) and a pistol does 2(cd). Does a dagger only add Sharp! to a melee attack or does it add 1(cd) to the base of 1(cd)? What we need here (at least I haven't found it yet) is a table of weapons that lists all weapons (including Spears, Javelins, Longbows, etc). A combat example would also be a big help.

Thanks, Steve. Oh, and another thing. A Radium bullet explodes in sunlight. How much damage does the bullet do when it explodes? Hopefully not like an incendiary?

I feel the character sheet needs to allow more room for the details of the character(race, language and so on).The equipment should be laid out as a list. Also the talents should be laid out so they are separated and do not run together to avoid confusion. So far these are the things me and my friends have noticed about making characters. We are going to ply the adventure this weekend and let you know anything we might find.

A few remarks on the Creating Heroes part:
- there is normally no common barsoomian written language, only the language spoken is common to everybody.
- I would emphasis the physical differences between male and female Green Martians, females are shorter with lighter complexion.
- Green martians are supposedly skilled at firearms, whereas the red martians are described as not good with them. That should deserve racial modifiers in my opinion.
- Okarians are the only ones that use short shields as part of their combat style.
- First-Born females supposedly do nothing at all! Hopefully the player characters will be exceptions!
- Where are the kangaroo men? :)

I would add a general chapter detailing differences in gender treatment, including the fact that player characters will probably be exceptions, which is fine. Women on Barsoom aren't supposed to fight but there are exceptions (like Tara and Tavia). Here is a useful quote from Warlord of Mars: "Heroic daughter of a heroic world! It would not be unlike her to have seized a sword and fought at my side, for, though the women of Mars are not trained in the arts of war, the spirit is theirs, and they have been known to do that very thing upon countless occasions."

Otherwise, very promising work so far, loving it! :)
