Feeling Very Stupid I Have To Ask This, But...

posted Jan 16, 2017 05:41:08 by albiegamer@gmail.com
I have both the MC Core and Player's Guide, and im going nuts trying tofind all the traits mentioned in the char gen tables.

I have a player who got the trait "Old War Wound". Ive done searches of both PDFs for both "trait" and "war wound". Both appear frequently but never t provide any defintion or explanation. Heck i cant find any section that defines ant of the character traits.

Help me Obi-Wahn Kenobstein, your my only hope.

The traits listed in the character generation section are only there. Playing them out gives the GM a reason to award a chronicle point to the player. For example a character with an old war wound may use it to complain about the weather, get into a conversation with a wounded veteran by using the scar as a starting point, show off the scar to an NPC to intimidate him etc.
Traits are there to get creative with them, this is why there aren't any strict rules or descriptions for them.

And the best part of them is that they are optional, in fact you can use different traits in place of the ones in the table. A character receiving an inheritance has the suggested trait "Annoying Family", but you can easily replace it with something like "Shady Business" representing the fact that his inheritance is not quite legal.

Traits are under-explained, and not often used. The pregens don't have them, for example. I would like more expanding on them personally as it feels like they were added in as an afterthought like near the end of production someone cracked open a FATE rulebook and was like 'ooh this looks neat let's throw this in here real quick before it goes to the publishers'.

Thaks for the replies. Ive been over and over the boks trying to have a very strong grasp of everything before my first session, and thankfully this particular thing got pushed to the forefront and forced me to finally dig deep into the riles and clarify this particular "mechanic".

I do fear what my players are going to do in-game when i explain this.

If they start hamming their traits you can start adding Dark Symmetry points to your pool instead of awarding them Chronicle points. Remember as a GM you can give them rewards for good plays but you can make their life hard for dumb ones.

I think the point with traits is that they shouldn't be a rod for the players. or a reason to meta-game and earn bonuc CP's. If the trait is being used completely out of context, don't allow the CP. They should be a reason to roleplay and have some fun, not viewed as a profit mechanic.
