New Group . . . Which Era

posted Sep 19, 2016 08:39:47 by gewaltatron
Hi Guys,

I am about to be the GM for our first attempt on Mutant Chronicles. Although most people in our group have some RPG experience (DH, SR, ..) we are all new to MC. While preparing I started wondering, which era would be the best (easiest to set up) to start with our group. However I couldn't decide, so I am here to seek out your advices :) So any comments are welcome and I am looking forward to them...

Best,
G.

in a way I am looking for some advice on which adventure to start with. I read that the dark legion campaign strongly suggests it should be played as a sequel to the dark symmetry campaign. however someone told me that the dark symmetry era is not the easiest to start with ... hence my confusion :)

Second era by far.You only have Luna City which supports first era with any serious info, and there is no books supporting it with gear, so you will have to wing the gear for mankinds technology golden age for your group. I strongly recommend you play the second era, which is what all the books support.

The two available eras lend themselves to different play styles, and Dark Eden will add another soon. While PeterSagefjord has point with equipment for the Dark Symmetry era it is not as bad as you think it could be. And don't believe that Dark legion should be played as a sequel. Here are my thoughts about the two currently available eras:

Dark Symmetry-
The playstyle here will mostly be similar to Call of Cthulhu, with players doing detective work to solve mysteries that will lead them to shadowy monsters or corrupt humans representing the first coming of the dark soul. Battles will be rare and you won't find too many chances for straight up military campaigns. If you go the corp against corp rout you'll find that the conflicts are intense but limited in scope, since many developments that fuel conflict in the setting have yet to happen (loss of southern Mars by Capitol for example).

Dark Legion-
The DL era offers less subtlety from the main enemy, you can play it very similar to Dark Heresy. Additionally everyone is at everyone else's throat. There are many chances for epic military campaigns, mystic shenanigans and so on. Where DS is subtle and has players facing the unknown, the DL era pitches them against the full power of darkness. Forget small potatoes where the end boss is a Malignant, instead serve them a salad of a full blown cult led by a Nepharite. You'll also have more space to play with, since humanity has reached beyond the asteroids and Whitestar opened its bunkers on Earth.

So in my opinion the difference between DS and DL comes to whether you want to play an covert or an overt campaign. In DS you can easily have your players walk through dark corridors, with lights flickering and failing due to corruption, with an unknown enemy at the end. And in DL you'll have the heroes storm a heretic fortress staffed by traitors to mankind and led by powerful servants of darkness, with less mystery but more danger. But be warned, you can switch those playstyles and play DL as a detective horror and DS as a combat heavy game, but you'll have to work on it.

Thx guys! That was a lot of good information. I ordered the DL Campaign and we will start with it, just to get things going as soon as possible and with as little extra work as needed.

I really appreciate your fast and detailed replies!

I'd just like to point out that the Dark Symmetry era, depending on when exactly you set your campaign, is actually chock full of wartime stories. Remember that the Dark Legion is in full-on onslaught mode shortly after 0 YC--the Venusian Crusades happen between 0 YC and the start of the Dark Symmetry Campaign...

Good luck! I would also start in the DL era, especially if you haven't played before. We've just started a campaign with the Venusian Apocalypse adventures. I think that's a good staring point, I hesitated between that one and DL but I think VA is bit more easily handled. I would have a look at it if I were you.

I agree on the "if new to MC, start with Venusian Apocalypse or DL era generally." We played the crap out of MC back in the day, so the Dark Symmetry era is exciting because it's new.

Ok I will take a look at Venusian Apocalypse! Thanks for the advice. The easier to get into, the better, I think.

From the looks of it it is set in the Dark Legion era, with all the Brotherhood characters running around.

Any time time between 1253 (birth of Cybertronic, if you want to use them) and 1291 (Dark Legion Campaign begins) if you're planning to use them (base don what you've said). There's no specific date in the current edition, so a GM can set it any time after ideally (see my timeline based on the current books at http://www.modiphius.com/forum.html#/20151109/combined-timeline-5061091/page2/).

I asked the same question a few months ago and got this answer (you can find the thread in the forums)

"Hi Magnus,

The original Venusian Apocalypse trilogy didn't specify a timeframe and that was something we wanted to maintain when bringing it up to date. It's safe to assume that the Dark Legion are very active, which allows you to easily to set it during either the First or Second Dark Legion War. Hope that helps!

I've chosen to put our newly started Campaign in the years during the second Dark legion war ("present time" in the timeine).

@Bill @Magnus thank you very much guys! So if I put it during the 2nd DL War, I can still do the DL Campaign afterwards?

@MAgnus what year did you put it exactly?
