Huge Printing Error in Hard Copy (Versus PDF)

posted Oct 30, 2015 02:39:05 by Elizabeth Lestrad
Just trying to determine if this is just an isolated incident with my copy, or something larger but I noticed that in the final PDF, pages 130 and 131 showed no formatting problems at all. Yet in the hard copy I received today, there is a massive formatting error resulting in the loss of an entire paragraph that provides pivotal information in regards to the SSU mission seed "It's Personal".

Allow me to elaborate.

In the PDF, the final sentences on page 130 reads as follows:
Holtz is defecting to the Allies. You don’t know why, but he’s changed sides. That means tangling with ASOCOM as well. Two groups of spies are after this guy. Only one group will be successful. Make sure it’s you, because Stalin takes out his anger on those who fail him."

Yet in the printed copy, reads:
"Holtz is defecting..." Then continuing onto 131 (which it did not do in the PDF) "to the allies. You don't know why, but he's changed sides." <Obstructed by picture> "...[grou]ps" <Text obstructed by picture>

Just curious if anyone else noticed this error in their copies. Unfortunate it's too late for anything really to be done, especially since it's a fairly large printing error on the printer's part...

Thanks Elizabeth, I will look into that tomorrow when I have a copy to look at.
Will get back to you.

Hi, looked at the pages and you're absolutely right, there has been a big printing omission of a sentence on the bottom of page 130 and a formatting error at the top of page 131. The writing is indeed obscured by the image.

I have flagged this up and we are looking into sorting out printing issues. Thank you for letting us know about this!

Thanks for looking into it, wanted to let you know I did a little more digging on the matter and found out something that might have attributed to the printing error. If you look at the top of each page of chapter 10 and compare it to the pdf, none of the pages align with the PDF. They are all a few sentences off. I can't explain why it's just this chapter or specifically what caused everything in this chapter to be off, but it's not just those two pages as I originally thought.

Just curious if you had any more information on if the printer was able to get this situation sorted?

The second printing of the book will see it fixed. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

So we have to rebuy it??

We make a pre-order and get a defect book and anyone that buys it later gets a fixed book for the same price, pre-ordering from you guys in the future might not be such a good idea and it makes me a bit nervous to buy any other books from you as there could be problems and one just have to "deal" with it.

Hi guys sorry for the confusion - to be clear - we're not currently reprinting this book. So people who pre-ordered are not missing out as everyone in retail is also getting the same book. It's not a major enough error to justify a hugely expensive re-print and we have plenty of stock to see us through the coming months. We have to make a call with things like this. As it's not a critical piece of rules or adventure text and you have the correct info in the PDF (which everyone gets with the print book even in retail) we are continuing selling the existing stock. This is an exceptionally rare case of a layout error getting through our proof reading but luckily it doesn't stop your enjoyment of the game. Thankfully the rest of the Modiphius line is a fantastic example of very high quality production standards.

Hope that clear's it up!

I just want to throw out that it's expected that we would have to re-buy the book, and I have absolutely no problems doing such (partially thanks to a nearby Half-priced Books). Like Chris Birch said, it's not a huge problem, just mildly inconvenient. I for one can't wait for this to go into reprint so I can unload and get a corrected copy. It was a real buzzkill to my excitement on receiving the book to find the printer had botched the job (something you should have gotten your money back on Chris, they did screw it up). I just hope that when that time comes I don't run into any problems getting one (a copy with the corrections). Hopefully we get a reprint by next year though.
