The Totally Unofficial Mutant Chronicles Soundtrack

posted Sep 14, 2015 21:30:28 by John Kirkpatrick
First post!
I am a longtime fan of Mutant Chronicles ever since I found the core book in a second hand shop and the setting has always interested me. I missed the kickstarter, but I made sure to get the PDF of the core book as soon as it came out.

Anyway, on to my thread topic.

So what songs would you consider highly appropriate for a Mutant Chronicles campaign?

For me, ever since I discovered the original RPG, I have always thought that "the Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel was the unofficial Mutant Chronicles theme song. The lyrics could easy come straight from the pen of a Heretic who is receiving visions from Ilian or Muawijhe.

A really good and very appropriate soundtrack is Wolfenstein the New Order. Just pick a track, any track and it fits Mutant Chronicles like a glove.

I would use the cover version of The sound of Silence by Nevermore as I think metal works better for the Dark legion :P

I think darksynth has that retro sci-fi sound that fits a dystopian future.

I will fully support the use of the Gears of War soundtracks for Mutant Chronicles - I use them myself, as I feel that there's a lot of stylistic similarities between Gears of War and Mutant Chronicles (chainsaws on guns, massive overmuscled action heroes, darkness and horror, monstrous foes...)
Game Development - 2D20 System
System Design - Star Trek Adventures

Almost anything by Two Steps from Hell, they have tracks that are incredibly fitting.
For an exclusively Mishiman campaign I would use the Yamato Ensemble and other traditional Japanese artists to illustrate Samurai, especially powerful ones or old. For a more street/young samurai music I would pick a Yoshida Brothers album. And i would avoid almost all Taiko music, save for the Kodo album "Ibuki".
Depending on the mood of an Imperial campaign I would pick something from Fiddler's Green, High Kings or even some older Clannad songs with Gaelic vocals. I would go easy on the bagpipes, there a few tracks that really fit Imperial and those are mostly not the popular ones. Wicked Tinkers are also a good choice, since they combine bagpipes, Irish frame drums and a didgeridoo.
I'm a bit ashamed to say, but for Capitol tracks, especially those outside large cities I would pick country music like Marty Robbins or something by Brother Dege.
And for dark moments of horror - Lustmord.

I've used two steps from hell for almost every Campaign I've ever run no matter the genre. For music in the same vein I would recommend Immediate music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8J8FuNs300 and X-ray dog https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEfFouj5C1M&list=PL40D4F0C7F8D693C2.

I've always pictured Capitol as a more of 80's pop-rock type of corporation, stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTidn2dBYbY :P

For horror moments you should also check out Atrium Carceri: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRRrdcvom0M&list=PL68F91741859A11E9

Why is there no mention of Bolt-Thrower here?
Why?
I'm not always right!

Why?

Because reasons!

For urban games/Luna:
-Midnight Syndicate's "Born Of The Night" - one of the best neoclassic darkwave albums.
-Electroswing - mostly Parov Stellar and maybe Caravan Place for Bauhaus. Young Punx "Kowloon Kickback" (both original and Gramophonedzie's versions) is my theme song for the Fukido campaign I'm playing. here's the original:

Loving the playlists, Mortagon. Are you going to try for Mishima and Bauhaus too?

And Cybertronic...are we thinking Kraftwerk here?

What about Bladerunner soundtrack?

I was thinking kraftwerk for bauhaus.

ACDC for Imperial.

Metallica for Captial.

Marilyn Manson for the dark symmetry (especially antichrist superstar)

VNV nation for cybertronic.

For Mishima maybe Babymetal??... i ran out of ideas here. Or possibly the soundtrack from a samurai movie?

Brotherhood can have something classical i feel though i am useless at remembering which ones.

Whitestar... Rammstein is the only one i can think of which would be appropriate.

That was the plan ;)

Definitely some electronica and synth music for Cybertronic so Kraftwerk should fit right in.
