John Carter of Mars?

posted May 12, 2015 11:14:00 by NormanRay
Hi, I'm a Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs fan among other things and I'm glad you're producing the new Conan roleplaying game. Be sure I will be a customer!

But I'm not writing to you about Conan... this time anyway. Jim Sullos of ERBinc has announced a few weeks ago that a British company will produce a John Carter of Mars roleplaying game to be released around Christmas. I imagine you have your hands full with other rpg projects as Conan, but I was still wondering if you were that company though.

Best wishes for every of your projects, keep on with the good work. :)

Yess! I couldn't be more happy right now, I'm a lifelong Carter fan (well, since I discovered the novels in 1988 at least), and I've been waiting as long for games. Since Jeffrey Shanks said during the Howard Days that Chris Birch was more of a Burroughs fan than into Howard, I was hoping that you were THE company which owned the rights. And for boardgames and miniatures games also? That's a blast. And since I'm French I hope Sans-Détour will translate them too as they will do with Conan. But who am I fooling? I will buy the games in both languages anyway...

Well, dear Modiphius people, you made my day. I just hope I will be rich enough to buy everything!

Someone noticed that the John Carter logo and the title of the boardgame are similar to the one released by SPI in 1979. Will they be related?

Yes they are very similar, the estate had the rights to the logo and I thought it was perfect for us. We're going to be tweaking it somewhat before launch but it was a great place to start. There won't necessarily be any similarities with the old SPI game though - there's a few concepts we're playing with so we'll see...

With regards to the old SPI Warlord of Mars boardgame. I hope you guys take a really close look at it during development. I really think it captured the feel of the novels to a tee. Yes, the rules are clunky by todays standards and can use a bit of streamlining, but that's an artifact of the times. I just think the game is under appreciated and should be held in higher regards do to the things it was able to cover in such a a few pages of rules.

A map giving the player all of Barsoom to travel at the largest scale, all the way down to palaces and ruins, cities, houses, etc. to explore and fight through room to room at the smallest. Plus Random encounters based on terrain type meant you never know what was going to happen next, "your flyer get shot down while traveling from Greater Helium to Zodanga? Start walking".

The only thing I wish, was that they could have somehow merged the character game with the naval warfare game, that would have been the icing on the cake.

I'm definitely not saying to just reprint the old SPI classic, but instead see what it did well, and do it even better.

I can't wait to see what you guys have in store for all of us John Carter fans, and I'll be with you guys throughout the whole trip.

So... may I ask what are the current plans right now? Are you planning as Conan, if I understood correctly, to release the core game and then eventually a Kickstarter campaign for supplements? Do you have ideas yet about supplements (maybe supplements based on subsequent novels set after Warlord of Mars)? I think that French editions Sans-Détour will release a translated Conan rpg version, are there any plans to do the same for John Carter?

What I would LOVE to see, but may or not be possible, is the John Carter RPG to be the first in a series of games bringing the Solar System as according to Burroughs to the gaming table. Most of his novels all took place in the same universe and described exciting adventures on Mars (Barsoom), the hollow Earth (Pelucidar), Venus, etc. For example, in The Moon Maid, a space ship from earth, bound for Barsoom crashes on our moon and an exciting adventure takes place inside of its hollow interior. In one of the Pellucidar novels, they talk about making radio communication with John Carter on Barsoom using the Bradly Wave if I recall (been a long time, so I could be off on that one).

They're the "Gridley waves". Carson Napier was heading towards Mars when he made... a slight calculation error. Tarzan goes to Pellucidar too. And I hope the "fictional" Edgar Rice Burroughs will have a NPC character sheet! But I guess all these stories are separate licenses from John Carter.

Very true, but us Burroughs fans can dream. :-)

Anyway, I cant wait to get to experience this game as it is probably the one setting I have converted to more RPGs that any other. It will be great to have something official to play with.

You're lucky. I'm completely impervious to game design myself, not my thing at all, so I hoped for all my gaming life for somebody to do it for me! Finally this time seems to have come, at last... when I don't have currently time to play. Anyway, I'll treasure the game for later on. :)

I planned for the longest time to read the novels and take notes about the universe, for rpg purpose. I. just. can't. Every time I'm so taken by the stories that I can't put the books down, and I'm unable to take any note whatsoever!

We're actually planning to do the core book as a pre-order first - it's going to be beautiful! Then the minis and boardgame will come as a kickstarter later on!
