Setting Info

posted Aug 28, 2013 15:47:14 by brom00
I'm curious about some details of the setting, and how they will be handled in the new edition.
Here comes a bucketload of questions.
I hope someone finds in his heart to answer some of them, if they are not too spoiler-ish ;)

- Planet Earth ... what about it?
Is it still gonna be Dark Eden?
Is anyone from the rest of the MC-universe going there for any reason?
Why? Or why not?
What about the Dark Legion going there?

- why aren't the Corps expanding beyond the limits of the Solar System?

- how does the Steampunk vibe actually work?
are there cellphones, computers, the internet, TeeVee?
is there planet-to-planet telecommunication?

- does the general population knows that your NintendoDS can kill your soul?
what about Cybertronic?
are they still the only cybernetic-enabled Corp around?
and if so, why?

- what can Heretics do "magic-wise"?
i mean, are we looking at fireballs and teleport and creature summonings?
or something more subtle?
what about the Brotherhood's Art?

I spoke to Chris at GenCon. The timeline has been moved up to before the 1st Corporate war IIRC. So no Cybertronic.

Hi Brom we'll be answering a lot of this in the first book!

Ohhh kay! Here's what I can answer based on the above question...

- Planet Earth ... what about it?
CHRIS - Earth is in a post nuclear icy winter, something has poisoned the DNA of the creatures that survived the apocalypse and terrible things stalk the lands...

Is it still gonna be Dark Eden?
CHRIS - Yes our third main setting book is Mutant Chronicles - Dark Eden

Is anyone from the rest of the MC-universe going there for any reason?
CHRIS - In fact early on the Corporations realise there are so many resources to claim on Earth and race to send missions there to see what they can capture thinking the cloud covered world is long dead. Many of the great transports never made it off the ground and were packed full of resources and systems. Unfortunately they weren't ready for what they found when they landed...
Why? Or why not?
What about the Dark Legion going there?
CHRIS - You'll have to wait for the answer to this, but they're coming....

- why aren't the Corps expanding beyond the limits of the Solar System?
CHRIS - After they trigger the Dark Symmetry on Pluto, the fall of technology makes just travelling between the Moon and Mars a huge challenge let alone thinking of going beyond the solar system. The colonies are still growing, they have more land and resources than they could need, there is no need to travel further. However, with the explosion of the Dark Symmetry and the first appearance of the Dark Legion, travelling beyond the safe confines of civilised space is unthinkable

- how does the Steampunk vibe actually work?
CHRIS - It's more diesel punk than steam punk which is a subtle but important difference.
are there cellphones, computers, the internet, TeeVee?
CHRIS - There are - before the fall of technology through the Dark Symmetry. Even after the Pluto event it takes years for the collapse to take hold and have a serious impact and longer still for the Brotherhood to finally get people to destroy their old thinking machines. It took 300 years to get survivors off the Earth, establish the new colonies and get enough infrastructure in place to get back to the way of life people were used to in the late 21st century so technology during the Dark Symmetry timeline is not that much more advanced than we know it.

is there planet-to-planet telecommunication?
CHRIS - Yes but it has delays

- does the general population knows that your NintendoDS can kill your soul?
CHRIS - Few people believe the rumours, and the corporations don't want you to stop buying their equipment, as the madness grows it is only the Brotherhood that finally convince people to destroy the old tech. Really...if someone told you your iPhone 5 is going to grow a mouth would you believe them, or that when you heard your girlfriend telling you she hated you it wasn't really her?

what about Cybertronic?
CHRIS - You'll have to wait for Mutant Chronicles - Dark Legion - our second main setting book for them :-) As I've said before we've not removed anything from the setting, we're filling in the gaps...

are they still the only cybernetic-enabled Corp around?
and if so, why?
CHRIS - You'll have to find out :-)

- what can Heretics do "magic-wise"?
i mean, are we looking at fireballs and teleport and creature summonings?
or something more subtle?
CHRIS - We're about to release the powers documents for the 2.0 playtest so you will see. We've honed down the Dark Gifts and it should make sense...

what about the Brotherhood's Art?
CHRIS - As above you'll see...

Nice! I really look forward to Dark Eden.

Btw are you keeping the old timeline, that put MC 1st ed. around 1255 YC?
I hope you will explain what were the Dark Symmetry minions doing during the thousand of year they were absent. (and why Salladin left his big citadel!)
I would also like to know how Durand XI 'The Mad' was possessed by Darkness... but I can wait for the books :)

Hi Quark we've looked at timelines from all the supplements and merged everything, (tweaking dates where necessary some of them were out!) and have filled in the details. Yes we know what what the Dark Legion were up to all that time, and what happened to Duran XI.....

Ok! Really looking forward to that kickstarter :)

Btw I realized that the weapons list in 2.0 alpha rules is the same as MC 1st ed, although the setting is during the 1st corporate war (if I'm not mistaken).
Is is for convenience for the playtest?

We just statted out the weapons for the playtest as a starting point. Also we're seeing a lot of technological stagnation in the universe so we imagine the original pre-Dark Symmetry weapons were a little more advanced with computer aided sighting etc. It's likely people just tore out those systems if they could. The state of technology is not so advanced - just getting the colonies to a livable state and getting the basic industry in place to replicate life in the late 21st century has taken several hundred years so most of the weaponry is not that much more sophisticated.

Yeah, I guess the influence of the symmetry and the limitations set by the Brotherhood would make for a good ol' technological stagnation.
However human ingenuity - especially when confronted with the prospect of war - makes me think we would a least see the likes of Sherman Model 01, PSA MK.I, or MP-101 around the time of the first corporate war :)

Yes I am thinking we first see versions of them then. Actually in fact there would have been more weapons around, with computer aided gear, but as the Dark Symmetry took hold and the Brotherhood told everyone to destroy them, you'd see less and less variety
